The Big Kick-off...

The sale is over, the canopies neatly folded and put away to return to their owners, the tables sit in the barn away from the elements, the money's counted (that didn't take long!) and the lessons learned were priceless.

The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend was the maiden voyage, kick off for the new business venture "Smooring En Farm Friends LLC". There were things to be sold and animals waiting to be fed by the vistors. You could feel the excitement (and near panic) in the air.

Spiders, dinosaurs, and nuclear meltdown

This is my first blog entry on our new web page. I was going to do a typical introduction, to let you know who I am and what I hope to accomplish. Instead, I’m simply going to give you a glimpse of the way my mind works. If that doesn’t scare you off, then you’re definitely a Farm Friend.

It all started with a cobweb this morning. Actually, the cobweb was there two days ago (when I had company), it was noticed yesterday morning, and by last night’s e-mail I was apologizing to said company for the condition of my house.

Really she is coming!

Granny has been trying to decide what plaid pants to wear for her debut. Hmmmm.

Prayer for Japan

Loving God,
Creator of earth, atoms, wind and sea,
Hold and protect our sisters and brothers and all your creatures in Japan in your warm embrace.
Surround them with love.
Fill them with your peace.
Calm all in distress.
Send your Spirit of Wisdom to all working to end this crisis.
Bring all who are lost safely home and bless our dear neighbors with every grace they need today.
This we ask in the name of Christ.
Amen.

Personal Faith Statement

I have a simple and abiding faith.

  • I believe in Jesus Christ, both human and divine.
  • I believe in the Trinity.
  • I treasure gardens and thin places…
God’s first and ever-present mission fields.
  • I celebrate Scripture, faith, and life in mystery and metaphor.

I will share this faith with you, but I will not argue. God created each of us with a personal choice to make. Let us honor that in each other. May peace be with you.

Why Smooring En?

No marketing expert would advise starting a website before it’s polished and professional in appearance, or with a name that no one remembers or understands. And yet, here we are. Here’s the short explanation.

Smooring is a Celtic term that has to do with keeping the hearth fire in tact. Each night, someone in the home – often the mother – arranged the coals in such a way that they would hold their heat until morning, when they could be used to stoke up the hearth fire again. Some of the coals would even be passed on to a daughter at marriage, ensuring the future of the fire.
